She Tried to Sell My House With a Forged Signature - Then My Late Husband's Letter Spoke From the Folder
The Porch Showing I Never Approved
I pulled into my driveway, and my heart dropped. There were strangers on my porch, and inside, I could see Blake, my stepson, Tessa, his wife, and a real-estate agent bustling around. I had no idea what was going on.
I rushed inside, my keys jangling in my hand. “What are you all doing here?” I demanded, my voice sharp.
The real-estate agent looked at me, startled. “Ma’am, we have an appointment for a showing. I have the signed paperwork right here.”
I felt a cold chill run down my spine. “I never approved any showing,” I said firmly.
Blake stepped forward, his eyes avoiding mine. “Helen, we thought it would be for the best. This house is too big for you, and the market is good right now.”
I was furious. “You had no right! I am not selling my home.”
Tessa chimed in, “But it makes financial sense. You can move into a smaller place and have some extra money.”
I looked at the paperwork the agent was holding. And there, in a signature that looked somewhat like mine, was the authorization for the showing. “This is forged,” I said, my voice shaking with anger.
The buyers on the porch started to peer in through the windows, clearly confused by the commotion. I could feel the public pressure mounting.
I turned to Blake and Tessa. “How could you do this to me? This is the home I shared with my late husband. You are betraying me.”
Blake tried to justify it. “We just want what’s best for you.”
I stared at them, disbelief written all over my face. “Best for me would be for you to respect my wishes. You don’t get to decide what I do with my life or my home.”
The real-estate agent, realizing the situation was a mess, quickly gathered their things. “I’ll just let the buyers know this showing is off,” they said, looking embarrassed.
As the agent left and the buyers on the porch dispersed, I knew this was just the beginning of the battle to keep my home. I couldn't believe my own stepson and his wife would stoop so low.
But I was determined to fight back and protect the last connection I had to my late husband.
Do Not Let Them Leave
Just as Helen was reeling from the shock of the forged deed, her phone rang. It was Attorney Owen Bell. “Helen,” he said gravely, “the deed isn't the only thing your late husband protected.”
A few minutes later, Owen arrived at the house, where Helen's so-called “friends” were still trying to make a hasty exit. “Do not let them leave,” Owen commanded. Everyone froze in their tracks.
Owen walked over to Helen and handed her a sealed folder. “Open it,” he said. With trembling hands, Helen did as she was told in front of the stunned group. Inside was a letter from her late husband.
As she began to read aloud, the room fell deathly silent. In the letter, her husband had foreseen the greed of these so-called friends.
He detailed how they had always been trying to take advantage of their kindness, and he had taken steps to ensure their home and assets were safe.
He had set up a trust that would only benefit Helen and their children, and he had made it clear that anyone attempting to defraud Helen would face legal consequences.
The letter also included evidence of the friends' past shady dealings, which they had thought were well-hidden.
The color drained from the faces of the would-be swindlers. One of them tried to stutter out an excuse, but Owen cut them off. “You're all going to face the full force of the law,” he warned.
