The Lawyer At The Door Arrived Just After My Wedding Ring Became The Last Thing Holding Our Family Together
The Ring Hit The Table Before Anyone Helped Me
"Oops... too slow." Mark Ellison smiled as though he had merely made a harmless joke. Claire had just begun lowering herself into the dining chair he had courteously pulled out for her when he slid it backward across the polished marble floor. The chair scraped loudly. Claire dropped hard onto the stone.
Crystal glasses rattled. A brief laugh escaped Lisa Mercer before she bothered to hide it. "How embarrassing." Around the long dining table, elegantly dressed guests looked down at their plates instead of at the woman lying on the floor. No one stood. No one reached for her. Helen Ellison lifted her wineglass with practiced composure.
"She can't even sit properly." Claire pressed one trembling hand against the marble and slowly pushed herself upright. The sting in her hip was easier to bear than the humiliation burning behind her eyes. Mark calmly adjusted the cuff of his tailored jacket. "You're making this into more than it is."
Claire searched every face around the table. Not one looked ashamed. Not one looked surprised. It wasn't the first cruel joke. Only the first one performed before witnesses. She quietly brushed a tear from her cheek. Years earlier she would have apologized for ruining the evening.

He stopped beside the table. His eyes settled first on the wedding ring. Then on Claire. Finally on Mark. Lisa's smile vanished. Helen lowered her glass without taking a sip. Mark forced an uneasy laugh. "Robert, this is a family dinner." "It is," Robert replied quietly. "Which is why I'm here."
The Lawyer Chose A Different Client
Claire lifted her head. Though tears still shimmered in her eyes, her voice was calm. "My lawyer is here." No one had ever heard her speak with such certainty. Mark frowned. "My lawyer?" Robert rested the leather case on the table. "I resigned as the Carter family's attorney this morning."
The sentence landed harder than anyone expected. "I now represent Mrs. Claire Ellison." Mark stared at him. "You can't be serious." "I've never been more serious." Helen's face hardened. "You've worked for this family your entire career." Robert nodded. "And that is precisely why I know what has happened inside this family."
The room remained motionless. Robert opened the briefcase. Instead of removing stacks of legal papers immediately, he placed a small digital recorder beside Claire's wedding ring. Mark's expression changed. "What is that?" "A copy." "A copy of what?" Robert met his eyes. "The recordings Mrs.
