Two days before our wedding, I bent down to pick up my earring under my fiance's childhood bed. What I found instead made me call the cops and cancel the wedding.

The officers asked Tom where Edith was.

He laughed nervously. "There's a mistake. Olivia is just stressed about the wedding."

"Edith has been missing for days," I said.

"She left some old things here, and Olivia got confused," Tom said.

I put the receipts on the table. "These are from Edith's accounts."

Tom said, "She asked me to keep them safe."

I showed the letter to an officer. "She wanted her money back."

Linda read over the officer's shoulder. "You don't understand her situation."

Another patrol found Edith in a park. She was tired and hungry but okay.

"She just wandered off. I thought she had a ride," Tom said.

"Edith says you left her there," an officer said.

Linda grabbed a chair. "Tom, tell me that's not true."

"You had her phone. How could she call for help?" I asked.

Just then, Fiona called. She said she checked the wedding payments and found that some were made with Edith's card.

"You used Edith's money for our wedding," I said.

"She changes her mind all the time," Tom said.

I finally realized what he had been doing. He had been taking her money and making everyone think she was confused.

"The wedding is off," I said.

"You're just upset. You're not thinking straight," Tom said.

"No. I'm finally listening to Edith," I replied.

That night, we were supposed to have our rehearsal dinner. Tom was already there, telling our families that I was having a breakdown because of the wedding.

Fiona met me outside. "Are you sure you want to go in?"

"No, but I have to," I said.

Tom's face tightened when he saw me. "This was supposed to be our special night."

"There won't be a wedding," I said.

Some relatives looked at us. "Don't make a scene. Leave quietly," Tom said.

"You told them I couldn't be trusted," I said.

Linda stepped in and said, "Everyone calm down."

"Edith was left in the park without her money, phone, or ID," I said.

The guests started whispering.

Tom said she arranged a ride.

"She didn't. A stranger found her," I replied.

"Then explain why you had her things hidden," I demanded.

"And why her card paid for the wedding," I added.

Tom looked around the room, speechless.
