At 2:46 A.M., my twin sister called me in a panic, 'Luna, you must come now!' A loud bang ended the call. When I reached her home, her husband feigned calm and said she was asleep. But upstairs, I found her hurt, and her broken phone kept recording it all.
The Terrifying Call
The shrill ring of the phone jolted Luna Reed awake at 2:46 a.m. She groggily reached for it, only to hear her twin sister Stella sobbing on the other end.
“Luna, please come get me. Caleb is—” Stella managed to choke out before a loud crash interrupted her.
The noise was followed by a sharp gasp and the sound of the phone hitting the floor. Then, the line went dead.
Luna stared at the screen in shock. As a domestic violence detective, she knew that sound all too well.
But this time, the victim wasn't a stranger. It was her own sister, someone she'd shared every important moment with growing up.
Luna had spent over a decade working in the Domestic Violence Unit of the Columbus Police Department.
She'd interviewed countless victims, documented their injuries, and listened to offenders make excuses for their violence.
Yet, hearing Stella's terrified voice made all her professional distance vanish. All she felt was pure, unadulterated fear.
Things had changed between the sisters after Stella married Caleb Gray six years ago. She'd withdrawn from family, rarely answering calls when Caleb was around.
Luna had noticed the long sleeves in warm weather, the excuses for bruises. She'd hoped Stella would ask for help when she was ready.
But now, with the call cut short, that hope was shattered. Luna knew she had to act fast.
She immediately contacted emergency dispatch, reporting a suspected domestic assault and giving them Caleb's address.
She waited until the report was complete. Revealing her relationship to Stella. Not wanting her involvement to affect the response.
The Disturbing Arrival
Luna reached Stella's house in a hurry. The street was quiet, but her heart was pounding. When she got to the door, she didn't even have time to knock before it opened.
Caleb stood there, wearing gray sweatpants and no shirt. He had an easy smile, but it seemed out of place given what had happened.
"Stella is sleeping," Caleb said calmly, as if nothing was wrong. Luna looked past him, trying to see inside.
She immediately noticed shattered ceramic beside the hallway table and a dark stain near the staircase. It was a stark contrast to Caleb's calm face.
"I heard her call for help," Luna said firmly. She wasn't going to be deterred by Caleb's act.
Caleb leaned casually against the doorway, not making any move to let her in. "You heard a married - couple arguing. It's private family business," he claimed.
"Move away from the doorway," Luna demanded. She knew something was seriously wrong and was determined to get inside.
Tessa of stepping aside, Caleb smiled even wider. He clearly didn't respect Luna's authority or her concerns.
"You have no authority to enter my home without a warrant," he said, trying to block her entry.
Just then, a weak, painful moan drifted from the second floor. Luna's heart skipped a beat. She had to get upstairs.
She stepped toward the stairs, but Caleb grabbed her wrist. Luna quickly used her defensive training to twist free and pin him against the wall.
"Touch me again, and the patrol officers approaching will add assaulting a police officer to tonight's charges," she warned.
As the distant sirens grew louder, the confidence faded from Caleb's face. Luna released him and ran upstairs.
Confrontation with Caleb
Luna demanded Caleb move away from the doorway. Tessa, he grinned wider, still not taking her seriously as a police officer.
“You have no authority to enter my home without a warrant,” Caleb scoffed, his tone full of arrogance.
Just then, a weak, painful moan came from the second floor. Luna tried to step towards the stairs, but Caleb grabbed her wrist.
Years of defensive training kicked in. Luna twisted her wrist free, shifted her weight, and pinned Caleb against the wall.
“Touch me again. And the patrol officers approaching this house will add assaulting a police officer to whatever else happened tonight,” Luna warned firmly.
Caleb's face paled as the distant sound of approaching sirens reached his ears. The confidence in his eyes faded quickly.
Luna immediately released him and rushed upstairs, not waiting for any more excuses from Caleb.
Upstairs, Luna found Stella lying beside the bed, one arm trapped beneath her body.
Stella's neck, shoulders, and forearms were covered in bruises. One eye was nearly swollen shut.
Her breathing was shallow, and there was dried blood at the corner of her mouth. Luna's heart ached at the sight.
For a moment, Luna forgot she was a detective. She only saw her twin sister in pain.
Then Stella slowly opened her eyes and whispered, “Luna, he said nobody would believe me.”
Just as Luna was comforting Stella, Caleb appeared in the doorway, ready with another false explanation.
Finding Stella
Luna reached the second floor and followed the weak, painful moan. Her heart raced as she rushed into the bedroom.
There, beside the bed, she found Stella lying with one arm trapped beneath her body. Bruises marred her neck and shoulders.
Swelling around Stella's eye was so bad it was nearly shut. Her breathing was shallow, and dried blood was at the corner of her mouth.
For a moment, Luna stopped thinking like a professional. All she saw was her twin sister in pain.
Then, Stella slowly opened her eyes and whispered, "Luna, he said nobody would believe me."
Just then, Caleb appeared in the doorway, already trying to come up with an excuse.
"She fell after drinking. She always gets dramatic when she drinks," Caleb claimed, trying to sound calm.
Luna barely glanced at him. She kneeled beside Stella and gently held her hand.
The flashing lights from the arriving patrol cars painted the bedroom walls red and blue.
"They don't need to rely on belief alone," Luna said quietly. "They only need to preserve what he left behind."
Stella's eyes filled with a mix of pain and relief as she looked at Luna. Caleb's face showed a hint of worry.
But Luna was focused on Stella, determined to get justice for her twin sister.
