The Shocking Announcement

I stood in my beautiful wedding dress, surrounded by the soft glow of the ballroom lights. The music was playing, and the atmosphere was filled with joy and anticipation.

But then, my future mother - in - law, Linda Harris, strode up to the DJ and snatched the microphone from his hand.

At first, I let out a nervous laugh. I thought it was some kind of strange, last - minute joke.

Maybe it was a quirky wedding tradition I didn't know about. But then, she fixed her cold eyes on me.

“First, Jake should get your manager position. Second, the apartment must be put in his name.

Third, once married, you must put this family first.” The words hung in the air. The ballroom fell completely silent.

All eyes turned to me, and I felt like I was in a nightmare.

My Achievements at Stake

I had dedicated seven long years to a marketing firm in Chicago. I started at the bottom, answering phones and doing menial tasks.

But I worked hard, stayed late, and took on extra projects. Slowly, I climbed the corporate ladder, and finally, I reached the position of marketing manager.

It was a huge accomplishment, one I was incredibly proud of. The apartment Linda was so eager to take from me was my pride and joy.

I bought it two years before I even met Jake. I scrimped and saved every penny for the down payment.

I spent my weekends and evenings choosing the paint, the furniture, and making all the upgrades. I never once asked his family for a single cent.

Jake's Betrayal

I whipped my head around to look at Jake, my heart pounding. I expected him to stand up for me, to tell his mother this was crazy.

Instead, he leaned in close and whispered, “Just say yes for now. We'll talk later.” A chill ran down my spine.

“You knew about this?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. He looked away, avoiding my eyes.

“Mom thinks it'll make things easier.” Linda smiled, a smug look on her face, as if it was all already decided. “Marriage means sacrifice, dear.”

My Reaction

I couldn't help it. I let out a loud laugh.

“Are you two crazy?” I blurted out. Some of the guests gasped in shock.

Jake reached out and grabbed my hand. “Luna, don't embarrass me,” he hissed.

I pulled my hand away. “You're worried about embarrassment?” I said, my voice rising.

Linda stepped forward, her eyes narrowing. “If you love my son, this should be easy.” I stared at Jake, the man I thought I was going to marry.

For months, he'd made little comments. He'd said my title sounded better than his, that the apartment didn't really feel like “ours,” and that his mom thought a wife should be more submissive.

I'd just thought he was feeling insecure. Now, I realized those were all warnings.

Ending the Wedding

I took a deep breath. I slowly removed my wedding ring and placed it gently on the table.

Jake's eyes widened in shock. “Luna, what are you doing?” he asked, his voice panicked.

I grabbed the microphone from the stand. “You wanted an answer in public.

You'll get it,” I said, my voice steady. I turned to face the ballroom full of guests.

“There'll be no wedding today,” I announced. The room erupted in whispers.

My dad stood up, his face filled with support. Linda tried to grab the microphone, but I held on tight.

“This is absurd,” she snapped. “You're ruining a wedding over a misunderstanding.” I shook my head.

“No. I'm ending it because your son expected me to give up my career, my home, and my voice.”
