When I Became a Director, My Mother - in - Law's Demand Led Me to a Life - Changing Divorce

The Promising Promotion

Ava's promotion to Director of Mara at Hartwell Medical Systems was a significant milestone. At thirty - four. She'd spent nearly a decade working her way up from an entry - level logistics position in Nora.

She'd endured late - night calls, fixed failing projects, and sacrificed numerous weekends. Her husband, Leo, had always promised they'd celebrate properly one day.

On the day of the promotion. Ava arrived home with champagne. Her promotion letter. Excited to share the good news. Little did she know what awaited her.

When she entered the house, her mother - in - law, Grace, was sitting at the kitchen table. Ava expected a warm congratulations.

But Grace didn't congratulate her. Sylvia, she glanced at the letter, crossed her arms, and made a shocking demand.

"Now that you're making director money, you need to pay me three thousand dollars every month," Grace said sternly.

Ava laughed, thinking it was a joke. She couldn't believe Grace was being serious about such a demand.

However, Grace was completely serious. She explained that she'd "invested" in Leo by raising him, helping through college, and supporting his early career.

In Grace's mind, since Ava now earned more than Leo, she owed her a monthly payment. Ava was taken aback by this logic.

She turned to Leo, hoping he'd tell Grace how ridiculous the demand was. But Leo wouldn't meet her eyes.

Then Grace leaned across the table and issued an ultimatum. "Pay me three thousand a month," she said, "or divorce my son."

Silence filled the room. Ava was stunned by the harsh words. She couldn't believe what was happening in her own home.

"Are you going to say anything?" Ava asked Leo, her voice filled with disbelief and hurt.

Leo rubbed the back of his neck and tried to find a way to justify the demand. "Maybe we can work something out. Mom’s mortgage went up. Julian thousand is a lot, but you just got a big raise."

This response from Leo was the final straw for Ava. She realized that her marriage was in a very precarious situation.

She decided that she wouldn't tolerate such a demand and the lack of support from Leo. Her high hopes for the future were suddenly overshadowed by this conflict.

The Demanding Mother - in - Law

Ava's promotion to Director of Mara at Hartwell Medical Systems should've been a moment of pride. But when she got home with champagne and her promotion letter, Grace was at the kitchen table.

Sylvia of congratulating Ava, Grace just glanced at the letter. Then she crossed her arms, a stern look on her face, ready to make her demand.

“Now that you’re making director money. You need to pay me three thousand dollars every month,” Grace said firmly. As if it were a simple fact.

Ava let out a laugh. She thought Grace had to be joking. This demand seemed so out of the blue and unreasonable.

But Grace was completely serious. She explained that she'd “invested” in Leo by raising him and supporting his career.

In Grace's mind. Since Ava now earned more than Leo. Ava owed her a monthly payment for all she'd done for Leo.

Ava turned to Leo, expecting him to tell Grace how ridiculous the demand was. But Leo wouldn't meet her eyes.

Then Grace leaned across the table. “Pay me three thousand a month,” she said, “or divorce my son.”

Silence filled the room as Ava and Leo processed Grace's words. The tension was almost palpable.

“Are you going to say anything?” Ava asked Leo. Her voice tinged with disbelief. A hint of anger.

Leo rubbed the back of his neck. “Maybe we can work something out. Mom’s mortgage went up. Julian thousand is a lot, but you just got a big raise,” he said.

That response from Leo gave Ava all the information she needed. She knew where his loyalties lay at that moment.

Ava went upstairs, dragged a suitcase from the closet, and started packing her things. Her mind was made up.

Leo followed her, suddenly alarmed. “Ava, don’t overreact,” he said, trying to calm her down.

“I’m not overreacting,” Ava replied firmly. “Your mother just put a price on our marriage, and you agreed with her.”

From downstairs, Grace shouted, “Let her go. She’ll come crawling back. She realizes no one else will tolerate her attitude.” But Ava was determined.

The Husband's Betrayal

Ava turned to Leo, her eyes filled with hope that he'd stand up to Grace. She expected him to label the demand as absurd and defend their marriage.

But Leo avoided her gaze, his silence speaking volumes. Ava's heart sank as she realized he wasn't going to be the support she needed.

Then, Grace leaned across the table, her voice firm. “Pay me three thousand a month,” she said, “or divorce my son.”

The room fell into an uncomfortable silence. Ava stared at Leo, waiting for him to say something, anything to fix the situation.

“Are you going to say anything?” Ava finally asked, her voice laced with disappointment and anger.

Leo rubbed the back of his neck, a nervous habit. “Maybe we can work something out. Mom’s mortgage went up. Julian thousand is a lot, but you just got a big raise.”

Ava was stunned. His response confirmed her worst fears. She realized that Leo was siding with his mother over her.

Without a word, Ava went upstairs. She dragged a suitcase from the closet and began throwing her clothes inside.

Leo followed her, alarm now written all over his face. “Ava, don’t overreact,” he pleaded.

“I’m not overreacting,” Ava shot back. “Your mother just put a price on our marriage, and you agreed with her.”

From downstairs, Grace shouted, “Let her go. She’ll come crawling back when she realizes no one else will tolerate her attitude.”

Ava carried the suitcase downstairs. She placed her wedding ring on the kitchen counter, her hands steady but her heart breaking.

She faced Leo, and his face turned pale. Grace smirked, thinking she had won the battle.

What they didn't know was that Ava had been the financial backbone of the family. The house was in her name, and most of the savings were from her hard work.

Ava took a deep breath. She knew that this was the end. She was done with a marriage where she wasn't valued or supported.

The next morning, Ava made a decisive move. She met with a divorce lawyer, ready to start a new chapter in her life.

The Decision to Divorce

Hearing Leo's words, Ava didn't need any more reason. She immediately made up her mind to divorce. Without a second thought, she headed upstairs.

Ava opened the closet and pulled out a large suitcase. She threw it on the bed, the sound of it hitting the mattress echoing in the silent room.

She started tossing her clothes into the suitcase haphazardly. Her mind was racing, filled with anger and disappointment.

Leo followed her upstairs, his face full of alarm. "Ava, don't overreact," he pleaded, reaching out to touch her arm.

Ava shrugged his hand off. "I'm not overreacting. Your mother just put a price on our marriage, and you agreed with her," she said firmly.

From downstairs, Grace shouted, "Let her go. She'll come crawling back when she realizes no one else will tolerate her attitude."

Ava continued packing, her movements quick and angry. She grabbed a handful of underwear and stuffed them into the suitcase.

She then packed some of her essential toiletries. Shoving them into a small bag. Tossing it into the suitcase.

Leo stood there, watching her, not knowing what else to say. His silence only made Ava more determined to leave.

Once she had packed all her necessary things, Ava zipped up the suitcase with a loud zip. It was a satisfying sound.

She dragged the heavy suitcase towards the door, her footsteps echoing down the hallway. Leo stepped aside, looking defeated.

Ava carried the suitcase downstairs and placed it by the front door. Then, she walked into the kitchen.

She took off her wedding ring, the symbol of their now - broken marriage. She placed it on the kitchen counter with a clink.

Facing Leo, Ava saw his face turn pale. Grace, on the other hand, smirked, thinking she had won.

But Ava knew that this was just the beginning of her new life, free from their unreasonable demands.

The Legal Process Begins

Ava knew she had to take action. The next day, she arranged a meeting with lawyer Sophia Lee at her office. Nervously, Ava sat across from the experienced attorney.

“I want a divorce,” Ava declared firmly. Sophia Lee nodded, her expression serious. “Let’s start by gathering all the necessary documents,” she said.

Ava handed over bank statements, property deeds, and other financial records. She explained the situation with Leo and his mother Grace in detail.

“It’s clear that you’ve been financially supporting their lifestyle,” Sophia Lee noted. “We have a strong case based on these records.”

Over the next few days, Sophia Lee prepared the divorce papers. Ava anxiously awaited the moment when Leo would be served.

Finally, on a Friday, a process - server was sent to Leo’s workplace. Ava could only imagine his reaction when he received the papers.

Back at home, Ava felt a sense of both relief and unease. She knew that this was just the beginning of a long and difficult process.

As the days passed, Ava focused on work to distract herself. She was determined to move forward with her life.

One week after serving Leo with the divorce papers, Ava decided to return home. She was accompanied by Sophia Lee and a locksmith.

As they pulled up to the house, Ava saw Grace sitting on the front steps. Her heart skipped a beat, wondering what was about to happen.

Grace looked up as Ava approached. Her face was red and puffy, clearly having been crying.

“Ava, please forgive me,” Grace sobbed, reaching out to grab Ava’s coat. Ava stared down at her, not sure what to say.

Just then, Leo emerged from the house, holding a thick envelope. His hands were shaking, and he looked pale.

“What’s that?” Ava asked, her voice steady. Leo didn’t answer right away, his eyes avoiding hers.

“It’s a default notice from the bank,” he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. Ava’s mind raced as she realized the implications.
