Lucy leaned closer to the screen.

The woman in the video looked over both shoulders before opening her mother's jewelry box.

She searched inside for less than thirty seconds.

She lifted the thick gold bracelet from the velvet case.

The very bracelet Lucy's mother-in-law had claimed their daughter had stolen.

The woman wrapped it in a white handkerchief, slipped it into her designer handbag, closed the jewelry box, and walked away as casually as if she'd borrowed a tube of lipstick.

"No... no..." Lucy's stomach twisted.

Their daughter had never touched that bracelet.

She never even entered Lucy's mother-in-law's bedroom.

Lucy fast-forwarded the footage another hour.

Lucy's mother-in-law returned home carrying grocery bags.

She opened the jewelry box.

Even without sound, Lucy could read the panic spreading across her mother-in-law's face.

The woman rushed over, pretending to help search.

She looked under cushions.

She slowly pointed toward the hallway leading to Lucy's bedroom.

Lucy couldn't hear every word, but one sentence was unmistakable.

"Maybe the girl..." Lucy's mother-in-law's expression changed instantly.

As though she'd been handed exactly the explanation she wanted.

Lucy skipped ahead again.

The footage made her blood run cold.

Their 3-year-old daughter stood in the middle of the living room crying.

She kept shaking her tiny head.

"I didn't... I didn't..." Even through the weak microphone, Lucy could hear those words.

Lucy's mother-in-law grabbed one of the girl's arms.

The woman grabbed the other.

Lucy's husband watched from the dining room.

He simply stood there with folded arms.

The woman disappeared for a moment.

She came back carrying electric hair clippers.

"No! No! Mommy!" the girl cried for Lucy.

"Mommy!" Lucy wasn't there.

Lucy's mother-in-law forced her into a dining chair.

The woman held down her legs while the girl kicked desperately, trying to escape.

Lucy's husband remained exactly where he was.

The clippers buzzed to life.

The girl's entire body trembled.

Lucy's mother-in-law pressed one hand against her forehead.

With the other, she pushed the clippers across the girl's soft brown curls.

The first lock fell into her lap.

The girl let out a heartbreaking scream.

She begged them to stop.

She promised she'd be good.

She insisted she hadn't stolen anything.

The clippers passed over her head until every curl lay scattered across the kitchen floor.

Lucy's mother-in-law grabbed the girl's chin.

Even through the grainy footage, Lucy could clearly read her lips.

"Now everyone will know what happens to little thieves." Lucy slammed the laptop shut.

Then immediately opened it again.

She couldn't risk losing this.

She copied the recordings onto an external hard drive.

Uploaded them to cloud storage.

Emailed them to herself.

Saved another copy on her phone.

No one would ever erase what they'd done.

The first person Lucy called was her best friend.

Her friend had been a family law attorney for nearly twelve years.

She answered on the second ring.

"Claire? What's wrong?" Lucy couldn't speak.

She simply sent her the video.

Five minutes later, Lucy's phone rang again.

Her friend's voice sounded different.

Who Had Been Taking Things

"You're useless," Lucy's mother sneered, "just like that pathetic old man rotting in the shed." Lucy felt a chill run down her spine.

She rushed to the shed door and flung it open.

There, she found her grandfather-emaciated, trembling, and locked in the damp darkness.

At the wedding altar, the groom tightened his hold on Lucy's hand and hissed, "From this moment on, you're under my control. Never forget your place." Lucy smiled gently and replied, "If you wanted a submissive wife... then let me introduce my witness."

Twenty-five years later, her husband left her at the airport for his mistress.

But when he scanned his passport, he realized Lucy had already outmaneuvered him.

One day, Lucy's husband hit her and ordered her to hide the bruises.

When she opened the door, he saw the person who could ruin him.

At the funeral of her twins, her husband showed up with his mistress.

In front of the coffins, he called her a bad mother.

When Lucy asked him to be quiet, he struck her and whispered, "Say another word, and you'll die with them." In her parents' eyes, Lucy had always been the family disappointment.

"You're useless," her mother sneered again, "just like that pathetic old man in the shed." Lucy's blood went cold once more.

She ran to the shed and found her grandfather in the same pitiable state.

At the wedding, the groom's warning was a harsh reminder of his domineering nature.

But Lucy had a plan.

After a long marriage, her husband's betrayal at the airport was a shock.

Yet, Lucy had prepared her counter-move.

There was also the time when her husband's abuse was met with a powerful surprise at the door.

In the custody hearing, her ex-husband's lawyer held up her daughter's shabby shirt to prove she was an unfit mother.

But her eight-year-old daughter calmly asked the judge to open it, revealing hidden words that exposed her father's lie and changed the course of the hearing.

After the divorce, Lucy called her father, "Fire the 27 employees my in-laws secretly placed in the company." While she was in the hospital, Lucy's parents and sister told her six-year-old adopted daughter she was going back to the orphanage.

Her sister shouted that they needed space for "real" children.

Lucy remained calm.

By the next morning, her whole family was in chaos.

One day, Lucy's husband wrote to her, "Don't be late tonight. Mom has a surprise for you." Lucy returned from the military base, smiling, with her one-year-old daughter in her arms.

She had no idea what was coming.
