The Lunch Surprise

Mara Lane walked into Nolan's office with a bag of lunch. A smile she had practiced on the drive over.

The smile died the second she saw Tessa Bell sitting behind Nolan's desk in his suit jacket.

Nolan was standing beside her, laughing.

Tessa looked up first.

"So you're finally here," she said, like Mara had walked in late to a meeting she was not invited to.

Nolan's face changed fast.

"Mara, this isn't what it looks like," he said.

Mara set the lunch bag down very carefully.

"Then explain it," she said.

He did not.

Tessa stood and looked Mara over with a lazy little smirk.

"You should stop pretending you're still his wife," she said.

Mara did not answer her.

She only looked at Nolan.

"Say something," she said.

He stared at the floor.

That was enough.

Mara turned to leave.

Tessa moved fast.

By the time office security stepped in. Mara was in the executive restroom. Staring at her reflection with half her hair gone.

The Bathroom Mirror

The first thing Mara saw was the hair on the floor.

The second was the jagged mess on her own head.

Tessa had taken her time.

She had wanted the damage to feel personal.

Mara touched the uneven ends and felt her hands start to shake.

Then the door opened.

Security came in first.

Nolan followed them in, breathing hard.

He looked at Mara, then at Tessa.

"What were you thinking?" he snapped.

Tessa did not even blink.

"I did it for us," she said.

That sentence landed harder than the scissors had.

Mara looked at Nolan.

He did not come to her side.

He did not apologize.

He just stood there looking stunned, like the room had betrayed him personally.

Mara stepped past both of them and went straight to her car.

She did not cry until the door shut.

Then she looked at her reflection in the rearview mirror and called Nolan.

Five Minutes

"You have five minutes," Mara said when he answered.

He laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he still thought he could talk his way out of it.

"Mara, don't be dramatic," he said.

"Bring Tessa to Daphne Ross's office," Mara said.

"Now."
