As the rain tapped against the windows, there was a knock at the door. When Emily opened it, Lucy stood on the porch in her navy nurse’s scrubs.

Lucy’s dark hair was damp from the rain. She had been adopted by Emily and Harold when she was just eight after her mother passed away.

She stepped inside the house and placed a sealed envelope on the kitchen table. Her eyes were full of kindness and determination.

“Rachel it after I leave,” Lucy said softly, her voice gentle yet firm. Emily looked at her in surprise.

“No, Mom. Just promise me you’ll call Dr. Clara Reed tomorrow,” Lucy added, her concern obvious.

Then she gave Emily a tight hug. Emily could feel Lucy trembling slightly as they embraced.

After Lucy left, Emily slowly picked up the envelope. Her hands were a bit shaky with anticipation.

She opened the envelope carefully and found a cashier’s check for $3,500. Her eyes widened in shock.

Along with the check was a note. Emily started to read it with a lump in her throat.

The note said, “Mom, you saved my life when I had no one. Let me save your sight now.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears. She was so touched by Lucy’s kindness and selflessness at that moment.

She knew that with this money, there was hope to save her eyesight. Lucy had truly come to her rescue.

Son's Selfish Visit

Three days. The surgery. Emily returned home with a bandage on one eye. A glimmer of hope. But then, there was a pounding at the door.

At first, she thought something dreadful had happened as Michael rarely visited unannounced. She slowly shuffled to the door, her vision still blurry.

When she opened it, Michael pushed inside. He was tall, wearing an expensive wet coat. Victoria stood behind him, arms folded and angry.

“What is going on?” Emily asked, confused by their sudden and aggressive arrival.

Michael turned to her sharply. “Did Lucy give you money?” he demanded.

Emily blinked in surprise. “That’s why you came?” she said, looking from him to Victoria.

Tessa of them asked about the surgery, her sight, or if she was in pain. “Yes,” she replied, “she helped me.”

Victoria scoffed. “Unbelievable,” she muttered under her breath.

Michael ran a hand through his hair. “How much?” he pressed.

“That is none of your business,” Emily retorted firmly.

“It became my business when my name got dragged into it,” Michael said, frowning.

Emily was confused. “What are you talking about?” she asked.

Victoria stepped forward. “Lucy posted something,” she said accusingly.

Standing Up

Emily stared at Michael and Victoria, disbelief written on her face. They were more concerned about their reputation than her well - being.

“The surgery is already paid for,” she said firmly, her voice steady. Michael's eyes widened in surprise.

“Then give the money back to Lucy,” Michael demanded, crossing his arms. Emily took a deep breath.

“No,” she repeated, “Lucy gave this out of love, not to protect your image.” Victoria scoffed.

Victoria's eyes narrowed. “You're just playing the victim. Enjoying all this attention,” she accused.

Slowly turning to Victoria, Emily said, “For years, I've kept quiet. But not anymore.”

Michael shifted uncomfortably. “Mom, don't be so dramatic. This is unnecessary,” he tried to reason.

“Dramatic? You said your lake house was more important than my eyesight,” Emily shot back angrily.

The room fell silent as her words hung in the air. Michael looked away, unable to meet her gaze.

Emily walked over to the mantel and picked up Lucy's note. She handed it to Michael.

Michael hesitated, then took the note. As he read, his face changed, showing a hint of remorse.

Victoria leaned in. “What does it say?” she asked. Emily was about to tell her.

“It says, ‘Mom, you saved my life when I had no one. Let me save your sight now.’” Emily's voice was filled with emotion.

The Reveal

With a heavy heart and a determined look, Emily took Lucy's note from the mantel. She held it out to Michael, her eyes steady, challenging him to read it.

Michael hesitated, his hand hovering over the note. For a moment. He seemed to be weighing his options. But then he slowly reached out. Took it.

As he began to read, his face started to change. His brows furrowed, and a look of guilt washed over him.

Victoria, standing beside him, leaned closer, her curiosity getting the better of her. "What does it say?" she demanded.

Emily took a deep breath. Said. "It says. 'Mom. You saved my life. I had no one. Let me save your sight now.'"

Michael's eyes widened as he heard the words. He stared at the note, as if trying to absorb every letter.

A silence filled the room. Michael stood there, unable to meet Emily's gaze. His face was a mix of shame and regret.

Victoria's expression softened a bit, but she still seemed defensive. She shifted from one foot to the other, clearly uncomfortable.

Emily looked at her son, her eyes filled with disappointment. "This is the kind of love and care I needed," she said quietly.

Michael finally looked up, his eyes moist. "I... I didn't realize," he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.

Emily shook her head. "It's not about realizing. It's about being there when someone needs you," she replied.

Michael hung his head, his shoulders slumping. He knew he had made a big mistake, and the note had made it painfully clear.

The room remained quiet, the weight of the moment hanging in the air. It was a turning point, and only time would tell what would happen next.
