The Long-Awaited Arrival

Olivia lay in the hospital bed, the ceiling tiles blurring as she tried to steady her breathing. Twelve hours of labor had left her body completely drained.

Down the hallway, a baby cried. Olivia’s arms ached with the longing to hold her own newborn.

Max paced beside the window, phone in hand, grinning like a kid on Christmas morning. His excitement was palpable.

At home, their four daughters—Isabella, Sophia, Emma, and Mia—waited eagerly to meet their new brother.

“Hannah just texted,” Max said, smiling. “The girls made a banner. Mia tried to help, mostly ate the crayons.”

Olivia laughed, despite the pain. The thought of her daughters’ antics brought a small smile to her face.

“Isabella promised Sophia she could hold him first,” Max added. “Emma wants to know if he’s coming home tonight.”

“Not tonight, sweetheart,” Olivia replied softly. She knew they needed to stay at the hospital a bit longer.

Max moved to the bed and squeezed Olivia’s hand tightly. His enthusiasm was almost uncontainable.

“I told you, this one was mine,” he said, looking thrilled. His words were full of pride.

Olivia had found it easier to smile when he talked about trying again. She didn't want to see his disappointment.

After Mia was born. Max had kissed her forehead. Whispered. “Next time.” His hope for a son was clear.

Olivia remembered the small blue-painted bedroom with the wooden train set on the shelf. It was waiting for a little boy.

A Helpful Friend

One evening, Max paced the hospital room, phone in hand. He told Olivia about their daughters' excitement to meet the new baby.

“Your sister Hannah just texted,” he said. “The girls made a banner. Mia mostly ate the crayons.”

Olivia laughed, despite the pain. Max added, “Isabella promised Sophia she’d let her hold him first.”

Max squeezed Olivia's hand tightly. “I told you, this one was mine,” he said.

“Ethan dropped off dinner at the house last night,” Max mentioned. “Lasagna. He said to tell you congrats.”

Olivia agreed, “He’s been a lifesaver these last few months.”

Ethan had handled school pickups when Olivia's back was bad. He drove Emma to ballet and sat with Mia at the doctor.

He also delivered groceries on Sundays. He'd been Max's best friend since they were fourteen.

Once, Max came home early and saw Ethan and Olivia laughing over coffee. “You two look comfortable,” he said.

Later that night, Max asked how often Ethan came over when he wasn't home. Olivia didn't think much of it.

Another memory popped up. Two summers ago, at a pool party, Ethan had Isabella on his shoulders.

As he bent to set her down, his shirt lifted, showing a birthmark on his back. The memory quickly faded.

The Moment of Truth

The doctor appeared in the doorway, lowering her mask. “Olivia,” she said, smiling. “You did beautifully. He’s healthy. Seven pounds, four ounces.”

Max’s face lit up in a way never seen before. “A son,” he whispered. “We have a son.” His eyes filled with tears.

“Thank you,” he said to the doctor. The nurse, Tessa, rolled the bassinet closer. Inside was their tiny bundled baby.

“Ready to meet Dad, little man?” Max lifted the son as if he were sacred. “Look at him, Olivia,” he whispered. “He’s perfect.”

Olivia nodded, too overwhelmed to answer. Max reluctantly handed the baby back. Tessa opened the swaddle.

Suddenly, the atmosphere in the room changed. Max’s eyes locked on the baby’s back, staring intently.

“It can’t be,” he said quietly. He bent closer to the bassinet, as if a different angle could change what he saw.

Olivia watched him in confusion. “Max, what’s wrong?” she asked, her voice full of worry.

“Tessa,” Max said flatly. “Can you leave us for a minute?” Tessa looked between them and left.

“Honey, you’re scaring me,” Olivia said. “What’s wrong with him? Is he okay?”

Slowly, Max turned to her. His eyes were wet, but the softness was gone. “Ethan,” he said. “He was at the house with you.”

“Olivia you asked him to help,” Olivia replied. Max looked at the baby again. “Your son has his birthmark,” he said.

Olivia laughed, thinking he was joking. But Max’s expression was deadly serious, and his next words would shatter her world.

Accusations and Heartbreak

Max turned, eyes hard as he faced Olivia. “Ethan was at the house all those months. With you,” he spat out.

Olivia was stunned. “He was helping us because you asked him to,” she said, her voice rising.

Max looked back at the baby. “Your son has his birthmark, the same shape and place,” he accused.

Olivia laughed, thinking it was a bad joke. “Max, what are you talking about? He’s your son,” she said.

Max raised a hand. “Don’t say his name like you don’t know,” he snapped.

“I don’t know,” Olivia cried, her voice breaking.

“He was alone with you every week,” Max said, his voice full of anger.

“I was pregnant and you were working overtime. He’s your best friend,” Olivia pleaded.

As her milk came in, Olivia sat up too fast. Her stitches pulled, and she reached for Max.

He jerked away as if burned. “I don’t need a test to know,” he said coldly.

“Julian the baby to Hannah’s. I can’t be in the same house,” Max ordered, walking to the door.

Olivia begged, “Max, please look at me. Don’t do this.”

Max didn’t look back. He left, leaving Olivia alone with the newborn.
