At Hannah's house. Olivia stood in the hallway. A diaper bag in hand. A phone full of unanswered messages. The baby was safely in the car seat.

Isabella had twice asked when Dad was coming. Olivia didn't know what words to use to comfort her.

Hannah took the car seat and said, "Sit down. You look like you're about to collapse."

The banner the girls made for the baby lay on the stairs, one corner bent. Sophia asked if to save it for Dad.

Olivia told her yes, as she couldn't explain why they weren't going home. Her heart felt heavy.

Olivia kept trying to call Max. Hannah said, "Stop calling him. He's not listening."

Olivia replied, "He's my husband. I have to make him listen." Hannah shook her head.

Hannah then suggested, "Prove it with a DNA test. He can't argue with that."

So, Hannah went to their house and brought back Max's toothbrush from the bathroom.

Olivia quickly swabbed the baby's cheek. It was done in just ten seconds.

But mailing the samples was hard. She sat in the parking - lot, shaking with the envelope in her lap.

Waiting was torture. She replayed every moment Ethan had spent around her.

She thought about the coffee at the kitchen table while Max worked late. Her mind was in turmoil.

The Unwelcome Visitor

Ethan stood at Hannah's porch, a stuffed bear in hand. He rang the bell, waiting expectantly.

Olivia opened the door a crack. She looked tired and stressed. Ethan was confused by her guarded look.

“Olivia, what’s going on? Max blocked me. Did I do something?” Ethan asked, concern in his voice.

Olivia hesitated. She didn't want to deal with this now. “I can’t talk about it right now,” she said.

Ethan was taken aback. “But we’re friends. I just want to know what happened,” he insisted.

Olivia tried to reassure him. “We’re fine. Just give us time,” she said, closing the door a bit more.

Ethan was left standing there, holding the bear. He couldn't understand what was going on.

He looked at the door, then placed the bear on the porch. He felt rejected and confused.

“He deserves to hear it from Max. Not me,” Olivia murmured to herself as she watched Ethan walk away.

Ethan turned back one last time, hoping to see the door open. But it remained shut.

He shook his head and started walking down the path. His shoulders slumped in disappointment.

Olivia closed the door fully. She leaned against it, exhausted by the encounter.

The Shocking Revelation

Olivia opened the PDF in Hannah's kitchen. Her hands were steadier than expected. The result read, 'Probability of paternity: 99.99%.'

For a brief moment, relief washed over her. A week ago, she'd have called Max right away and begged him to come home.

But then she remembered Max pulling away in the hospital and walking out as she pleaded. She wouldn't beg this time.

Olivia forwarded the result to Max. Less than an hour later, he stood on Hannah's porch. She opened the door but stayed in the doorway.

"Olivia," Max's voice broke. "I'm so sorry. So, so sorry." He said he'd read the result four times.

"Nora, let me hold him. Let me come home," Max pleaded. Olivia looked at him seriously.

"One question. Answer it honestly," she demanded. "Why does our son have Ethan's birthmark?"

Max's expression went blank. His practiced apology vanished. He seemed at a loss for words.

"Max, start with the birthmark," Olivia insisted. Max pulled out his phone and called Ethan.

Ethan answered after three rings. Max asked about the birthmark on his back. Ethan said, "You need to come over. Both of you."

At Ethan's place, he looked at Max. "Our father had the same mark. Your father was my father too."

Olivia was shocked. "How long have you known?" she asked. Ethan explained the whole story.

Max finally understood. He pushed his chair back. "That's why you were like that at the funeral," he realized.

Olivia watched them. "You have a lot to talk about," she said, putting on her coat. "I got the answer I came for."

A New Beginning

Max stood on the porch, his eyes pleading. “Olivia, I was wrong. Nora forgive me and come home.”

Olivia looked at him steadily. “One birthmark made you leave me. My words meant nothing until there was proof.”

Max reached out his hand. “I was angry. I didn’t think straight. I’ll do anything to fix this.”

Olivia stepped back, avoiding his touch. “You needed proof to believe me. I can’t live like that.”

Just then, their son began to cry from inside. Olivia turned towards the sound.

Max tried again, “Let me make it up to you. I’ll be a better husband and father.”

Olivia thought of all the times she’d sacrificed for him. She shook her head firmly.

“I’ve spent years making myself small for you,” she said. “I won’t do it anymore.”

Max looked crushed. “Nora, don’t do this. We can work it out.”

Olivia walked into the house, picked up her son from the bassinet.

She held him close, feeling a new sense of strength. “I’m choosing us,” she whispered.

With her son in her arms, she walked past Max, not looking back once.

She was starting a new chapter, one where she didn’t have to sacrifice herself.
